    • We tell interested people by e-mail where we will be. At this time, the location is TBD, which is normal, and will be determined usually by Tuesday. Next club meet is August 30, 2015.

  1. Hello,

My name is Michael McLeod, Vice President of Nine Gates Mahjong Club, at Rochester Institute of Technology, in Rochester, NY. We have recently opened registration for our first open Japanese Riichi Mahjong tournament, the 2016 Rochester Riichi Open! The tournament will occur on Saturday, March 12 and Sunday, March 13. The cost of registration is $35, which gives you entrance into the tournament and lunch on both days. We will be using the WRC (World Riichi Championship) rule set that can be found on the event website below.

The last day to register will be February 28 so please sign up as soon as possible if you plan to attend.

Please contact us with any more questions. Thank you.

    Sincerely,

    Michael McLeod

  2. Hello,

I was looking for Mahjong clubs located in Montreal and would love to participate in some of your meetings! I don’t speak French and have never played mahjong IRL before, which I hope isn’t enough to cause problems.

    • Hey, it shouldn’t be a problem. We’re used to operating in a bilingual environment, and we’re open to teaching. We’re checking when our next meetup will be, either Easter weekend (so likely the Saturday?) or on April 9 or 10. I’ll keep in touch 🙂

      • I’m glad to hear that! Hope to meet you guys in a month then, and please inform me here if there happens to be any problems contacting me.

      • Hello. I’m posting here another e-mail of mine that I check just as frequently, and think would be more convenient for you to use since gmail is far more commonly known.

  3. Hey! I’d like to be able to join a meetup soon, although the earliest one I can make is probably the 31/1 weekend. I’m still learning the yaku and playing vs AI, although hopefully by the point I do join you guys, I’ll have some more experience under my belt.

I do have a question, though: do you guys have any fees that need to be paid? I’ve known a few groups (mahjong and not) that require a fee to be able to join, but I see no info on that here, so I thought I should ask.

    • First-time visitors are welcome without any charge. We do ask that people keep in mind that our location is often a bistro or café establishment, and suggest at least consuming something available on site (coffee, tea, snacks, etc). Without them, our available places to play would drop to avery low number.

Our next meetup will be on the weekend of January 28/29, 2017. I will contact you privately so you may contact us in the future by e-mail.

EDIT: For transparency’s sake, we do have a minor contribution for the next three visits (5$, 2$, 2$), and then we do not charge anything else to club members.

  4. Hi, I know about you guys through a friend of mine and I’m interested in going to meetings some times. I’ve played riichi for roughly one year. However I speak relatively little French, would that be a problem?

    • We welcome people from both the English- and French-speaking community. Our member’s bilingualism may vary greatly, but if you’re interested in playing, we’re interested in having you join us. As far as I know, it’s virtually guaranteed that there will always be someone able to communicate in English at every table. I will contact you by e-mail with more information.
